Curitiba Biennial 2013: Curatorial Concept

The Curitiba International Biennial reviews the biennial as a format and leaves aside the practice of selecting a theme and a title. Today, this practice is little convincing as it is the result of the ascendancy of the curatorial gesture. The connection between theme/title and the art works exhibited in any biennial is feeble or imaginary, since nearly any subject/title, typically a spectacular advertising resource, can apply to nearly any grouping of art works. As art works remain while themes/titles are forgotten, this edition of the Curitiba Biennial will focus on the selection of art works that could represent an aesthetic experience of significance to the city. The only criterion for the selection of such art works is quality/relevance: they must impose themselves by their quality and must be able to point to some of the numerous issues in contemporary art. Each art work will have its own speech. No art work will be subjected to the curator?s logo.

Nevertheless, this edition of the Curitiba Biennial will open a special space for urban art, which is a player ever more present in the international scenario and that offers a direct and immediate contact with the city users. Thus, the Curitiba Biennial intends to leave a denser, longer lasting artistic residue than usual, also by establishing reflection & practice laboratories that will seek to take hold of the strength lines contained in the art works selected and transform them into vectors that unfold the creation in Curitiba. Teaching institutions and various reflection centers in the city ? schools of art, architecture, communication and research institutes ? will have a relevant role in the process.

The biennial is a form that, as such, contains the general traits that define the category to which it belongs and the singular aspects of any of its eventual manifestations. The biennial-form today is an entity in conflict: this edition of the Curitiba Biennial reaffirms the traits of the biennial-form and contradicts them as much as it can without nullifying it. History will do it, if it is the case.
