Liu Jianhua was born in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province, in 1962. In 1985, he was admitted to the Fine Arts Department of Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain College, majoring in Sculpture. Liu graduated in 1989 and went on teaching at the College of Fine Arts at Yunnan Arts University. Since 2004, Liu has been a professor in the Sculpture Department of Fine Arts School of Shanghai University. The artist currently lives and works in Shanghai, China. Liu Jianhua is an artist with continuous exploration and deep thinking. At the beginning, his artworks used ceramics as a medium. Through the coexistence of the hard and the fragile of ceramics, he sought to imply modern metaphysics of material obsession and uneasiness, and to reveal the unique characteristics of modern society. With the deepening of the creation, he has gradually turned to the use and testing of integrated media in recent years. Liu held his solo shows in China and overseas. The artist’s work is included in the permanent collections of Tate Modern, London; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; Shenzhen Art Museum; Guangdong Museum of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Today Art Museum, Beijing; Yuz Museum, Shanghai, etc.
